Memorial to backpackers

THE British Commonwealth and Queensland governments have united to a fund a $100,000 memorial in Childers in honour of the 15 victims of last month's backpacker hostel inferno.
Prime Minister John Howard announced the plan to commemorate the lost backpackers in London alongside his British counterpart Tony Blair.
Premier Peter Beattie, also due to meet Mr Blair, said the people of Childers would be consulted on the plan before anything was built.
"I will also hold discussions with Mayor Bill Trevor when I return to Queensland to ensure the people of Childers are also given the opportunity to get involved," Mr Beattie said.
Queensland will match the British Government's $25,000, with the Commonwealth adding another $50,000.
Talk of a permanent memorial has been a subject of discussion in the town since the June 23 fire at the Palace Backpackers Hostel.
Isis Shire Council general manager Steven Johnson said a suitable site for the memorial would have to be found.
