Regional airports get security upgrade

THE Australian Government has announced more than $145,900 from the Regional Airport Funding Programme to upgrade security at Griffith Airport.
This round of funding will provide Griffith Airport with more than $145,900 to establish a secure chemical storage facility on the airport grounds.
Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss said this upgrade will increase confidence in the security of Griffith Airport and will provide a boost for local community.
"The Australian Government is determined to do all it can do to protect the security of the many people and businesses in regional Australia who relied on their airports for transport services," he said.
Since March 10, 2005, 150 regional airports have been designated as security-controlled airports and have a transport security program approved by the Australian Government.
Mr Truss said grants from the Regional Airport Funding Programme were tailored to meet local requirements and this funding would help Griffith Airport increase and improve its security.
"Broadening the security base will reinforce travellers' confidence in the Australian aviation industry which is already regarded as one of the safest and most secure in the world.
"The Australian Government is continuing to work closely with industry to implement a range of measures to increase security for the regional aviation industry," he said.
The Regional Airport Funding Programme will provide $36.5 million to increase security measures at up to 150 eligible regional airports across Australia.
Mr Truss said the funding brings the total amount of funding approved to date for 122 airports to more than $28.6 million.
Mr Truss acknowledged the support of the Australian Airports Association in negotiating funding arrangements for the regional airports.
