$4 million to drive regional development growth
SOUTH Australia's regional communities will benefit from a new $500,000
State Government programme aimed at implementing South Australia's
Strategic Plan in country areas.
Minister for Regional Development Karlene Maywald says the State Budget
will provide the funding to help communities to respond to key
priorities identified in the plan.
Minister Maywald said priorities included regionalising government
planning and service delivery as well as working to meet specific aims
for the regions as outlined in the plan.
"The government recognises the enormous potential of regional
communities as the best implementers of the plan's regional objectives,
but we also recognise the need to help them build the capacity of our
regions to respond," she said.
"This funding will assist communities through this process so that
regions can strategically respond to the challenges and opportunities
of the future and builds on programs already in place in regional
communities.
"This particularly applies where new economic development projects are
taking place and will require appropriate infrastructure, workforce and
local services.
"It is an exciting time for the State's regions and we need to ensure
that we are on track in working towards the State plan's regional
objectives."
South Australia's 13 regional development boards have received nearly
$3.5 million in ongoing funding for 2007-08 to support core business
activities, business adviser services and remote area officers.
"This year's funding is the last under the current funding agreement
and negotiations are currently underway with local government for a new
five-year funding agreement for the 2008-09 financial year and beyond,"
Minister Maywald said.
"Regional development boards facilitate and support regional economies through their advice and support to regional business.
"Their pivotal position in regionally based employment and training
programs and their capacity to provide a voice on regional issues is
helping to drive much of the development in regional economies around
the State." |
