the joy of steam rail SIXTY
years after the last Victorian Railways steam train
departed Walhalla in 1944, the Walhalla Goldfields
Railway has started regular steam hauled services between
the townships of Thomson and Walhalla.
The historic town of Walhalla is situated in the
Gippsland region of Victoria only two and half hours from
Melbourne.
After years of hard work the Walhalla Goldfields Railway
has a sound of steam engine once more passing through the
scenic Stringers Creek Gorge.
Climb aboard 'The Spirit of Baw Baw' steam locomotive and
journey into the past on this historic railway. The
locomotive was built in Germany in 1956 and had a limited
working life in Thailand before being retired in the
early 1960s. After a major overhaul in Victoria the steam
train is once again ready for action.
The Walhalla Goldfields Railway officially reopened in
2002 with trips from Thomson Station to Walhalla on a
diesel train. The track is now recognised as one of
Australia's most unique tourist railways.
Trains to the standard timetable on the first weekend of
every month until the Summer fire ban period. On other
operating days the regular diesel hauled trains will
operate as normal.
The standard return ticket price for travelling on The
Spirit of Baw Baw and all other trains on the Walhalla
Goldfields Railway is $15 for adults, $10 for concession
and children under 16, or $35 for the family (2 adults
and 3 children). One way tickets are available at a
cheaper price.
