MORE JOBS NOW ON MODL LIST
By Lance Fee,

THE Minister for Immigration and Citizenship and the Minister for
Employment and Workplace Relations made a joint announcement in early
August in which more occupations were added to the Migration
Occupations in Demand List (MODL).
The new list now consists of 38 managerial and professional
occupations, one associate professional, 10 computing specialisations
and 46 trade occupations.
The new list has been added to by the inclusion of the following
occupations; architect, computing professional (sybase sql server),
external auditor, quantity surveyor, aircraft maintenance engineer
(avionics), aircraft maintenance engineer (mechanical), furniture
finisher, locksmith, optical mechanic and painter decorator.
Once an occupation is placed on the MODL, it entitles any applicant who
has these skills to a further 15 points and, if there is also a job
offer in Australia, this can be increased to 20 points.
For many, it can now mean they are entitled to a visa instead of falling short of the required pass-mark.
The MODL has grown from the time it was first introduced from around 25
occupations to over 90 at the present time, reflecting the increasing
shortage of skills in Australia.
The other benefit for those who have an occupation on this list is the priority processing on their visa application.
Before September 1, priority processing meant that most applications
for MODL occupations were granted within six to eight months of being
lodged and, in the case of most trade occupations, the total time
including the skills assessment would have been no longer than 9 to 10
months.
However, with some trades now being required to undertake a practical
assessment in addition to the written assessment, this time scale is
very unlikely in the future. |
