Taupo to host A1GP
TAUPO
is gearing up to host the sixth round of the popular A1GP World Cup of
Motorsport in January, a race expected to be the biggest motorsport
event in New Zealand for 50 years.
More than 20 countries compete in the nation-versus-nation series,
which started its second season in the Netherlands on October 1.
The New Zealand team last year finished fourth in the inaugural A1GP
series.
The central North Island town was confirmed as a venue for the event
after a push by developers and motorsport backers to upgrade the Taupo
Motorsport Park so that it could host large races. The New Zealand
Government provided $2 million to help the venue become a world-class
facility.
The countries involved in A1GP account for 80 per cent of the world's
population. Some 2,000 media representatives attended the 11 events
last year and about 127 different programmes were generated at each
round.
As such, exposure from the race is expected to boost New Zealand's
tourism industry and also provide a fillip to other industries by
highlighting the country's innovative spirit.
Taupo's race will be the first meeting of 2007. The event has been
sanctioned by MotorSport New Zealand, and will be managed and promoted
jointly by A1GP, MIT (the operators of the Taupo Motorsport Park) and
A1 Team.NZL. |
