Broadband speeds up

MORE broadband subscribers were using faster download speeds at March 31, 2007, Statistics New Zealand have revealed.
Results from the Internet Service Provider Survey for March 2007 show that an increased download speed of 2Mbps to less than 10Mbps had become the predominant download speed for broadband subscribers.
The leading upload speed for broadband subscribers continued to be 128kbps to 256kbps.
The number of broadband subscribers continued to increase - up 18.5 per cent in the six months to 31 March 2007, to reach 724,600. However, the growth rate has slowed from an increase of nearly 30 per cent in the 12 months to September 2006.
Subscribers with dial-up connection fell 4.1 per cent from September 2006, down to 739,700.
At March 31, 2007, 89.8 per cent of all broadband subscribers had a data allowance cap on their subscription. The figure was 97.6 per cent six months earlier.
The number of subscribers with a data cap of more than 20GB increased 157 per cent, to 48,000 at the end of March 2007. There were 73,900 subscribers with no data cap, up 400 per cent from 30 September 2006.
The Internet Service Provider Survey is a census of all Internet service providers in New Zealand and is conducted every six months.
